Brian Armstrong reiterated that x402 could become a standard payment rail for AI agents, arguing that autonomous software will need to buy APIs, data and other digital services on its own and will eventually outnumber humans. Built around the long-unused HTTP 402 "Payment Required" code, the open protocol uses stablecoin-based onchain settlement so an agent can request access, receive a payment address and pay within seconds without separate accounts, subscriptions or manual approval. Armstrong has also said he is tracking AiFi development in real time, and while x402 could help form the infrastructure for an emerging agent economy and broaden competition in digital payments, adoption is still early and depends on developer and platform integration.
