President Donald Trump will host Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington on Sept. 24 for a White House meeting expected to focus on artificial intelligence, trade and technology, with Xi skipping the United Nations General Assembly to center his U.S. trip on the bilateral relationship. The plans, confirmed on Aug. 17, would make the session the second in-person Trump-Xi meeting of 2026 after Trump's state visit to Beijing in May. Earlier reporting said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent would hold preparatory AI talks with Chinese counterparts before the summit, with discussions likely to include model safety, intellectual property regulation and potential implications for chip export controls. Xi is reportedly due to arrive late on Sept. 23 and leave on Sept. 25. His decision to forgo the U.N. gathering is consistent with a long-standing pattern: he has attended the General Assembly only once since taking office in 2012, and Premier Li Qiang represented China there in 2025.
