Tesla is preparing to put its steering-wheel-free Cybercab on public roads in Austin as soon as this month, starting with employee rides and then adding the vehicle to its robotaxi fleet days later in what would be its first passenger service since the model's October 2024 debut, The Information reported. Internal targets point to a late-August public launch, though timing could still change, and Tesla has been testing production vehicles on Austin streets since June, collecting employee feedback on private roads since July and training local first responders. The Cybercab is Tesla's first purpose-built autonomous vehicle, designed around its Full Self-Driving system and backed by remote operators for emergencies, but it remains unclear whether Tesla has the same type of regulatory approval that allowed Amazon's Zoox to charge passengers in a vehicle without steering controls. Tesla currently runs its Austin robotaxi service with 186 modified Model Y vehicles, while Cybercab production and validation are expanding in Texas and other U.S. cities. The planned debut would still amount to a limited rollout as Tesla seeks vehicle-specific data, broader approvals and a path from testing to recurring robotaxi revenue, with its latest disclosure showing 380,000 cumulative driverless miles against Waymo's more than 220 million driverless passenger miles since 2020.
