FKI said on the 18th that it and the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy will hold an international seminar on the 31st at the FKI Tower Conference Center in Yeouido, Seoul, under the theme "The Future of the New Trade Order: Korea's Opportunities and Challenges." The meeting is intended to explore new forms of trade cooperation as the World Trade Organization (WTO, global trade rule-setting body)-centered multilateral system loses strength and countries lean further toward protectionism. A central focus will be open plurilateral cooperation (trade deals open to later entrants), including the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP, Asia-Pacific free trade pact), which the organizers described as becoming one pillar of a new trade order. For Korea, whose economy depends heavily on exports and trade, the seminar will address how to secure a stable and predictable trade network. Deborah Elms, head of trade policy at the Hinrich Foundation, and Jeffrey Schott, senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE), are scheduled to speak in sessions on the future of the global trade order and Korea's policy choices. Panel discussions will follow the keynote addresses, and the event will offer free admission, registration through the FKI website, and simultaneous interpretation in Korean and English.
