Ethereum developer kevaundray has submitted EIP-12188, a proposal to shorten the consensus-layer block retention window in an effort to reduce storage pressure on nodes. The draft is in public review and has already drawn support from some Ethereum client developers. Developer DApplion backed the proposal, while Lighthouse client contributor michaelsproul said the change would not have a noticeable effect on Lighthouse operations. The proposal argues that changing demand for Ethereum historical data makes it possible to retain less consensus-layer history and use node resources more efficiently. Developers discussing the idea also said pruning execution-layer history could reduce the ability of some long-running nodes to serve old block data, but they do not view that as a threat to network security or normal node performance. EIP-12188 has not been merged and still faces further review and community debate.
