Algorand has cleared the 90% support threshold for version 5.0.0, its largest protocol upgrade since staking rewards launched in January 2025, according to an August 16 update from the Algorand Foundation. The changes are set to go live only after a mandatory 208,000-round cooldown of about seven days. The upgrade adds native Falcon-1024 accounts using post-quantum signatures, replaces flat transaction pricing with a resource-based fee model, and expands smart-contract capabilities. The foundation said basic transfers should remain low cost, while transactions that use more data or computation will pay more, and it cautioned that activation on mainnet, not threshold approval alone, remains the next milestone.
