South Korean police detained and referred three suspects accused of defrauding more than 100 elderly people of about 500 million won in a virtual-asset investment scheme. Investigators say the group operated offices in Seoul, Gwangju and Gunsan from November 2024 until recently, targeting victims in their 70s and 80s through in-person briefing sessions that promised "guaranteed principal" and profits of more than 10 billion won. The Gwangju Police Agency's Cyber Crime Investigation Team began investigating in March after receiving a lead tied to an investment presentation in Gwangju's Seo District, then tracked money flows to arrest the suspects. Police believe additional victims may still be unidentified and are widening the probe while warning the public against investment pitches that pair capital protection with unusually high returns.
