BioMarin Pharmaceutical said it will acquire Alesta Therapeutics for $275 million upfront, with up to $215 million in additional milestone payments, in a deal centered on ALE1, an oral drug candidate for hypophosphatasia, or HPP, a rare genetic bone disease. The transaction gives BioMarin a potential new asset in a rare-disease market where oral therapies can offer a different treatment approach from existing options. ALE1 is in Phase 1 development.
