Perplexity's free 12-month Perplexity Pro offer to Bharti Airtel's 360 million subscribers drove a sharp surge in India, with Sensor Tower data shared with TechCrunch showing 5.9 million downloads in July 2025, up 625% from June, and 56 million downloads during the seven months new users could redeem the promotion. After claims closed on January 16, 2026, downloads fell more than 90% to 3.3 million between February and July, but monthly active users still stood near 14 million in July 2026, more than five times the first-half 2025 average despite dropping 37% from an October peak of nearly 22 million. Sensor Tower estimates in-app purchase and subscription revenue in India between February and mid-August rose about 60% from the giveaway period, while average daily revenue from July 18 to August 12 ran 9% above the prior 30 days and 27% above the first-half 2026 average; Appfigures separately estimated monthly net mobile revenue climbed from about $34,000 in January 2025 to $156,000 in July 2026. The uplift is difficult to read as a clean conversion signal because the free plan auto-renewed by default, and Airtel and Perplexity later required users to add a payment card to continue the trial, prompting complaints from some subscribers who said the offer had originally been presented as not requiring payment details.
