Hong Kong police have detailed a cryptocurrency investment scam targeting elderly residents after a retired man in his 80s lost more than HK$5 million. The victim clicked a fake link in an online pop-up advertisement in June and downloaded a bogus app posing as Trust Wallet, a crypto wallet application. Fraudsters then impersonated customer service staff and used promises of high returns to persuade him to invest. Following their instructions, he withdrew money from a bank, converted the cash into ETH through a crypto exchange shop, and over the next one and a half months transferred cryptocurrency worth more than HK$5 million to wallets designated by the scammers. He realized he had been defrauded only after he was unable to withdraw funds from the fake app and the supposed customer service contacts became unreachable. Police urged families to pay closer attention to older relatives' internet habits and finances, and to share anti-fraud information proactively, warning in particular about investment scams built around fake apps and promises of outsized returns.
