Samsung Electronics will invest 240 billion won ($170.6 million) to build a new HVAC production base at its Gwangju plant, its first large-scale new investment at the site since 1989, as it targets cooling infrastructure demand from AI data centers. The 21,800-square-meter facility at the plant's third campus in Buk-gu, Gwangju, is due to begin operating in early 2028 and will produce coolant distribution units, fan wall units, computer room air handlers and air handling units. Samsung said the final budget was about 40 billion won above earlier industry expectations and that domestic CDU production reflects rising demand for liquid cooling as high-performance AI servers generate more heat. The project extends Samsung's integration of FläktGroup, the European HVAC maker it bought for 1.5 billion euros last November, and will combine the unit's central HVAC technology with Samsung's SmartThings Pro and b.IoT platforms to offer integrated energy-management and maintenance solutions. The line will become FläktGroup's 15th global production base and broadens the Gwangju plant from AI home appliances into business-to-business cooling systems as Samsung pursues a goal of becoming a global HVAC leader by 2030.
