GnosisDAO has approved GIP-153, with 123,158 GNO in favor, 115 against and 151 abstaining from 54 voters, authorizing Gnosis Chain to move from an independent Layer 1 network toward a zero-knowledge-proven Ethereum Economic Zone rollup. Total participation reached 123,425 GNO, comfortably above the 75,000-GNO quorum. The decision gives developers a mandate to design the transition, but it does not immediately convert Gnosis Chain into a Layer 2. Under the plan, Gnosis Chain would retire its validator set and use Ethereum for settlement and economic security, while aiming to preserve existing applications, account balances, contract addresses and the chain identifier. RPC endpoints could change, and the treatment of the network's dollar-pegged gas token has not yet been finalized. The first deployment is targeted for late 2026 or early 2027, depending on whether the required technology is ready. The Ethereum Economic Zone framework, developed by Gnosis and ZisK with Ethereum Foundation funding, is designed to address fragmented liquidity across Ethereum's scaling ecosystem by allowing participating networks to access Ethereum contracts and liquidity synchronously without relying on conventional bridges for each interaction. Gnosis Chain is expected to be the first production EEZ instance, with the proposal envisioning that a contract on Gnosis could call an Ethereum contract and use the result within a single transaction. The initial release will still carry important trust trade-offs. Gnosis cofounder and proposal author Friederike Ernst said the first version will use a centralized sequencer, and a forced inclusion mechanism for users to bypass a censoring or stalled sequencer will not be available at launch. The proposal also says Gnosis Chain's current security model is costly to sustain, with fee revenue covering only a small share of security costs and GNO issuance diluting non-stakers by about 2.3% annually. The vote therefore marks approval of a strategic direction rather than completion of the network's rollup transition.
