KKR has agreed to acquire a minority stake in BookMyShow, India's dominant ticketing and live entertainment platform, in a bet that rising discretionary spending and a youthful consumer base will support further growth in the country's out-of-home entertainment market. Financial terms were not disclosed, and the definitive agreement announced Tuesday remains subject to regulatory approvals. Founded in 2007 and operated by Bigtree Entertainment, BookMyShow has expanded from online movie tickets into films, concerts, sports, theater and streaming, serving more than 700 towns and cities in India and operating in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the UAE and Sri Lanka. Its BookMyShow Live division has become a key growth engine, hosting productions and artists including Lollapalooza India, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and Travis Scott. The deal adds to KKR's India consumer and technology portfolio as competition increases from Walmart-owned Flipkart and Eternal's District platform. Existing investors, including Network18, Accel, Elevation Capital, Stripes Group and TPG Growth, will remain in place. Founder and CEO Ashish Hemrajani said India's entertainment economy was growing "like never before."
