Coinbase's x402 payment protocol processed approximately 14 million AI-agent payments over the past 30 days, according to Bitcoin.com, citing Token Terminal data. Base accounted for 7.3 million transactions and Polygon for 5.6 million, while USDC was used for the overwhelming majority of settlements. Built around HTTP 402, or "Payment Required," x402 is an open protocol that lets AI agents make stablecoin-based onchain payments automatically for APIs and other digital services without separate accounts, subscriptions or manual approval. The activity highlights a shift toward machine-to-machine commerce, in which autonomous systems can procure operational resources and settle payments in real time. Coinbase has expanded related services across Base, Solana and Polygon, with USDC as the settlement asset. In July, Coinbase Business began allowing companies to receive AI-agent USDC payments directly, including tools for collection, reconciliation and withdrawals. Coinbase has described agent payments as one of its "high-conviction bets."
