Novo Nordisk has enrolled 450 overweight people in a clinical trial testing two lower doses of its Wegovy pill against a placebo to identify the minimum dose that still helps patients lose weight. The study began last week and is scheduled to run into 2028, according to a U.S. clinical-trials database, although the dose strengths have not been disclosed. Participants are adults who have struggled to lose weight through dieting, with eligibility based on Body Mass Index (BMI), a weight-to-height measure, and related health conditions. The trial will assess weight loss over 60 weeks, including the share of participants losing at least 5%, 10% or 15% of their body weight, as well as changes in waist size, other health measures and side effects. People with diabetes, recent major weight changes or current use of GLP-1 weight-loss medicines will be excluded. Wegovy contains oral semaglutide and is approved in doses of 1.5 milligrams, 4 mg, 9 mg and a higher long-term dose of 25 mg. The pill generated sales of 3.22 billion Danish crowns ($499.80 million) in the second quarter. Novo is under pressure after losing ground to U.S. rival Eli Lilly, while analysts expect the obesity-drug market to exceed $100 billion a year by 2030.
