President Lee Jae Myung met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at Cheong Wa Dae on Thursday as U.S. President Donald Trump’s renewed overtures to North Korea put Beijing’s potential role in regional diplomacy back in focus. Lee and Wang assessed China-South Korea ties as being on a steady path of improvement following reciprocal summit visits and agreed to build on that momentum ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen in November. Wang had earlier said that any summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Trump was for Pyongyang and Washington to decide, while urging the United States to change its long-standing hostile policy toward North Korea. The discussions also covered Korean Peninsula security, bilateral relations and regional affairs. Seoul has been pursuing a possible summit between Lee and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the APEC meeting, while Lee has proposed multilateral talks involving parties to the 1950-53 Korean War to establish lasting peace on the peninsula.
