Samsung Electronics plans to expand the core Pyeongtaek P5 plants No. 1 and No. 2 from two-story to three-story wafer-fab structures, potentially increasing cleanrooms and production capacity by about 50%. The company has submitted a plan to raise the site’s floor-area ratio from 350% to as much as 490%, subject to review by the Gyeonggi governor and approval by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Industrial Site Policy Deliberation Committee. Construction began in 2022 and is targeted for completion in 2030. The facilities are expected to produce high-bandwidth memory, advanced DRAM, next-generation V-NAND and advanced foundry products. The move comes as Counterpoint Research forecasts the global memory market will grow from about 360 trillion won last year to 1,500 trillion won this year and 2,100 trillion won next year. SK Hynix also plans to use three-story designs for all new fabs in its Yongin semiconductor cluster.
