U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Heidi Overton, a White House policy aide and former America First Policy Institute executive, to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The nomination follows the resignation of FDA director Dr Marty Makary in May and requires Senate confirmation. Trump said Overton would advance his America First health agenda, including efforts to negotiate most-favoured-nation deals with drug companies to lower medicine costs. Overton has medical and clinical-investigation degrees and has been critical of abortion pills, while her nomination comes amid tensions between the Trump administration and health agencies over vaccines and other areas of scientific consensus.
