President Donald Trump said data centers could use "a little public relations help" as opposition to new AI infrastructure projects grows across the United States. Speaking Wednesday at a White House event with cryptocurrency executives and technology leaders, Trump said AI would create jobs, drive innovation and generate economic activity. He said any mayor or governor offered the chance to attract an AI plant or data center should "absolutely want it" because the jobs and taxes would be "just enormous," while warning communities that reject projects could be "left behind." His comments came as Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-Pa.) imposed new energy, environmental and transparency requirements on developers, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.) introduced a statewide pause of up to one year on new hyperscale data centers requiring at least 50 megawatts. Research from Georgia Tech found that data centers produce stronger economic gains in metropolitan counties than rural areas and can raise retail electricity prices by about 5%. CoreWeave Inc. CEO Mike Intrator said moratoriums would affect where AI infrastructure is built rather than reduce demand. CoreWeave reported 4.2 gigawatts of contracted power and nearly 6 gigawatts of visibility when additional powered-land options and letters of intent are included.
