Novonesis expects results in the second half of 2027 from research with Novo Nordisk into whether microbiome supplements can provide additional benefits alongside GLP-1-based weight-loss medicines. The partnership, announced last year, initially focused on how the gut microbiome could improve metabolic health and on developing and testing synbiotic food supplements. Its focus has since shifted toward solutions that could complement GLP-1 medicines. Novonesis CEO Ester Baiget said users would take "a combination of synbiotics, probiotics and prebiotics." The companies plan to assess blood glucose, cholesterol, changes in the gut microbiome and related biomarkers. The work combines Novo Nordisk's obesity-drug expertise, including Wegovy, with Novonesis' capabilities in probiotics and the human microbiome as companies seek products tailored to weight-loss-drug users. Novonesis was formed through the merger of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen and supplies enzymes and microorganisms; its Human Health business includes probiotics, human milk oligosaccharides and other nutrition products.
