Optimism’s Token House approved a January 2026 governance proposal with approximately 84% support to redirect roughly $49 million worth of OP tokens through a buyback program. The plan will use 50% of the Superchain’s net revenue for recurring OP token purchases over 12 months. The Superchain is Optimism’s network of OP Stack-based chains, generating net revenue from sequencer fees and related activity. The decision marks a shift from Optimism’s historic reliance on airdrops, retroactive public goods funding and user incentive programs toward reducing circulating supply. The vote also raises questions about governance independence because the team that cast the deciding vote was funded by the Optimism Foundation. The pilot will face scrutiny over whether it can support price stability without visibly weakening developer activity; if it does, the model may be extended.
