Micron Technology will invest $10 billion over the next decade in Micron Research Labs, a Boise, Idaho, facility whose construction is expected to begin in 2027. The lab will bring together customers, suppliers, academia, government, startups and the broader semiconductor ecosystem to develop memory technology, advanced compute architectures, chip packaging and future manufacturing processes. The investment comes as AI infrastructure demand outpaces memory production: Nvidia may have signed multi-year HBM and DRAM supply agreements with SK hynix and Micron, according to Edgewater Research, while SpaceX CEO Elon Musk identified memory semiconductors as the biggest bottleneck to the company’s planned 15 to 20 gigawatts of AI data-center capacity by the end of next year. Micron’s initiative is separate from its previously announced plan to invest more than $250 billion in U.S. manufacturing and research and development through 2035, expected to create more than 90,000 jobs. The company aims to ease AI-driven data bottlenecks, strengthen the U.S. semiconductor base and compete with Samsung and SK hynix in high-bandwidth memory, although supply tightness, pricing, competition and the durability of AI spending remain uncertain.
