The S&P/TSX Composite Index edged below 36,500 on Thursday as rising oil prices revived inflation concerns and pushed bond yields higher. Oil gained after US President Donald Trump announced a sweeping package of economic measures targeting Iran. Financial stocks and the broader market came under pressure, with RBC, TD Bank and BMO each falling about 0.5%. Gold prices declined as investors took profits after bullion reached a more than two-month high, but miners remained mostly higher: Agnico Eagle rose more than 0.5% and Barrick gained nearly 1%. Canadian producer prices increased 12.4% year-on-year in July, underscoring the effect of higher energy costs on wholesale prices and reinforcing the elevated yield environment. The United States and Canada were reportedly nearing a trade deal.
