The US is intensifying its decades-long effort to disrupt Hezbollah's financial and political networks, maintaining the group's terrorist designation while imposing sanctions on Lebanese officials accused of enabling its operations. Treasury sanctioned nine Lebanese officials, including sitting members of parliament and security personnel, on May 21, then added more officials and members of a previously sanctioned business network on June 18. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has called for Hezbollah to be fully disarmed. A bipartisan Lebanon Sanctions, Stabilization, and Support Act introduced on August 7 would broaden sanctions on foreign entities tied to Iran's support for Hezbollah and condition US security assistance to Lebanon on progress toward disarming the group. The expanding sanctions list increases compliance and due-diligence risks for international businesses operating in or near Lebanon.
