Brazil will invest 2.3 billion reais, or roughly $444.2 million, announced on August 20, to expand its artificial intelligence infrastructure while pursuing technological sovereignty. The funding from the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FNDCT) will support two supercomputing projects in Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Norte. About 1.3 billion reais will fund infrastructure in Rio de Janeiro developed with Huawei Technologies and iFlytek for large language models, with the agreement scheduled to begin in July 2027. The remaining approximately 1 billion reais will go to a tender for an AI supercomputer to rank among the world’s top 10, expected to attract Nvidia, with operations targeted for the end of 2027 in Rio Grande do Norte due to its energy potential. This fits into broader announcements including a semiconductor partnership with Spain using open-source RISC-V architecture, a Brazilian cloud service through public-private cooperation, and a national center for algorithmic transparency and trustworthy AI.
