Nineteen cities have joined the compensation agreement with BHP, Vale and Samarco over the 2015 Mariana dam collapse, including Mariana, the disaster’s epicenter. The deal, signed and ratified in October 2024, now has the support of 45 of the 49 municipalities eligible for funding. It provides 170 billion reais ($32.74 billion) for compensation and reparation, including about 6 billion reais for affected cities. Only 26 cities had joined by March 2025, amid objections that the amount was insufficient and uncertainty linked to parallel legal action against BHP in London. London’s High Court ruled in November that BHP was responsible under Brazilian law, with a damages trial expected to start in April 2027. Mariana Mayor Juliano Duarte called the city’s participation a historic victory, while the court said four remaining municipalities may still join.
