China and Indonesia held their first Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue and second 2+2 meeting in Jakarta as Beijing criticized unilateralism and both sides sought closer economic, diplomatic and defense cooperation. Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Indonesian counterpart Sugiono and joined China’s Defense Minister Dong Jun and Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin for security talks. The countries agreed to expand joint drills, personnel exchanges and defense-industry cooperation. The meetings follow a maiden joint naval exercise east of Taiwan and take place amid disputes over China’s South China Sea claims, wider big-power rivalry in Asia and Indonesia’s non-aligned foreign policy. China is Indonesia’s top trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching about $167.4 billion last year, while Chinese investment has also faced regulatory friction.
