BOK deputy governor Kwon Min-soo backs won internationalization and MSCI upgrade

Kwon Min-soo, the new deputy governor of the Bank of Korea (BOK), said on the 20th that he would advance the internationalization of the won and support the country's inclusion in the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) developed-market index. He identified stronger responses to financial and foreign-exchange markets, stable round-the-clock foreign-exchange trading, offshore won settlement, digital currency and payment infrastructure as early priorities. Kwon also emphasized price stability, financial stability, household-debt risks, crisis lending-of-last-resort arrangements and vulnerabilities in exposed sectors. He pledged closer macroprudential cooperation with the government and financial regulators, stronger market communication and wider international engagement, while promoting artificial intelligence (AI) in the BOK's work and improving risk management. Kwon joined the BOK in 1995 and most recently served as assistant governor from May 2024, overseeing measures to stabilize the foreign-exchange market.
