Tesla has quietly ended its Solar Roof tiles program by informing its network of certified third-party installers that the company will no longer supply the integrated solar shingles and will provide only conventional solar panels going forward. Internally, the company concluded the product was not financially viable. The dedicated Solar Roof page now automatically redirects to Tesla's solar panel landing page, and the product has been removed from the Energy navigation menu, leaving Solar Panels, Powerwall, and Megapack as the only listed offerings. This marks the close of a nearly decade-long effort that began with Elon Musk's 2016 Hollywood unveiling of the solar shingles as part of the SolarCity acquisition. Despite ambitious targets of 1,000 installations per week, actual output reached only about 3,000 systems nationwide since launch, averaging 21 per week in 2022. Early cost estimates of $22 per square foot proved overly optimistic, with installations for complex roofs reaching up to three times higher due to structural issues, prompting a class-action lawsuit that Tesla settled for $6 million in 2023. Technical challenges including warping tiles, melting underlayment, and lower-than-claimed electricity production further complicated the offering. With Solar Roof now sunset, Tesla is pivoting its residential solar business entirely to conventional rooftop panels paired with Powerwall home batteries. The company is also planning a new $10 billion factory near Houston, Texas, to scale standard solar panel manufacturing, aligning with Musk's May 2024 announcement that the Texas gigafactory would be fully covered by solar panels. The retreat raises questions about long-term support and replacement parts for the approximately 3,000 existing Solar Roof customers. The decision reflects broader industry difficulties for aesthetically integrated solar products, as other companies have also scaled back or exited similar ventures. Tesla's energy segment continues to grow primarily through utility-scale Megapack batteries rather than residential solar installations.
