The Trump administration has notified Congress of plans to transfer $850 million to the United Nations, including $725 million for the regular budget and $125 million for peacekeeping operations in Haiti and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The payment would be the administration’s largest to the world body since it demanded sweeping reforms, but would cover only part of the roughly $5 billion in U.S. arrears cited by the United Nations. The transfer follows a $160 million payment in February, after Secretary-General António Guterres warned of imminent financial collapse. Republicans have raised objections that the plan does not go far enough in withholding assistance from the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees or addressing what the administration describes as bloated staffing and ideological policies. The United States has also withdrawn from organizations including the World Health Organization and UNESCO and reduced funding for other U.N. bodies.
