California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat who frequently attacks President Trump, urged parents to open Trump accounts, calling them one of the best things the president has done. The investment accounts became available last month and include a $1,000 federal deposit for children born during Trump’s second term. Newsom also praised Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker for their work on the program, and credited first lady Melania Trump’s Fostering the Future initiative with helping address custodial eligibility gaps that could exclude foster children. California has enrolled in the federal effort after former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey contacted Newsom, and the governor said he had requested state appropriations to support the commitment. Newsom also highlighted California’s CalKIDS program, which has funded more than six million accounts worth more than $2.3 billion, although only one million have been claimed. A partnership with Invest America will seek employer and philanthropic donations split between the two programs as Newsom approaches the end of his two terms and weighs a possible presidential run.
