The Vatican plans to build a roughly €100 million ($117 million) agrivoltaic plant combining solar power and agriculture at its Santa Maria di Galeria estate on the outskirts of Rome. The facility could have 80 to 90 megawatts of capacity and take 18 to 24 months to complete, including permitting and administrative procedures. It is intended to supply Vatican Radio's transmission station, support energy self-sufficiency for Vatican City State and potentially serve Holy See-linked properties such as Rome's Bambino Gesù hospital. Any surplus electricity would be made available to Italy. Tracking solar panels would cover about 200 hectares of the roughly 450-hectare estate. Contracts are expected to go out to tender in the coming weeks. The project was a priority for the late Pope Francis and has been endorsed by Pope Leo XIV.
