U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) said Congress should bar presidents, their spouses and senior officials from issuing, sponsoring or profiting from cryptocurrency while in office, making an enforceable prohibition a condition for her support of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, known as the CLARITY Act. A Reuters/Ipsos survey of 1,166 U.S. adults conducted Aug. 14-17 found that 63% considered Trump and his family’s cryptocurrency profits inappropriate, compared with 32% who viewed them as appropriate. Trump reported more than $1.4 billion in crypto-related income for 2025, largely from World Liberty Financial and the Trump meme coin, according to his certified annual disclosure released June 30 by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics. The CLARITY Act faces its first Senate floor test on Sept. 15, when senators will vote on cloture at 2:15 p.m. EDT; 60 votes are required to advance the motion.
