Republicans portrayed recent primary victories by progressive candidates Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and democratic socialist Angie Nixon in Florida as evidence of extremism in the Democratic Party. U.S. Senator Tim Scott called the party’s left wing "dangerous, radical, and, frankly, weird," while U.S. Representative Anna Paulina Luna said Nixon’s nomination would motivate Florida Republicans to vote against her. Other Republicans, including U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson and Texas Governor Greg Abbott, described the Democrats as dominated by the Democratic Socialists of America, although very few Democratic candidates are DSA members. Democrats Jake Auchincloss and Chris Van Hollen argued that the party should include the DSA in debate about its future rather than fight it, as left-leaning voters seek an alternative to the pre-Trump status quo.
