Eli Lilly has launched its oral drug Foundayo in UK pharmacies for weight management and type 2 diabetes, making Britain the first European country where the treatment is available. Known chemically as orforglipron, the tablet offers an alternative to injectable GLP-1 treatments and can be obtained through private prescriptions after Britain’s medicines regulator authorized it on August 10. It is the second GLP-1 oral pill cleared in the UK, following Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy. Lilly is working with NICE, England’s health cost-effectiveness watchdog, on a possible rollout through the state-run NHS. Foundayo is expected to cost between £100 and £120, below the £330 monthly price of Lilly’s Mounjaro injection. The drug remains under review in the European Union. Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill has received a positive recommendation from the European Medicines Agency, but the European Commission has yet to make a final decision.
