Open-weight models accounted for 62% of all tokens processed through Vercel’s AI Gateway on August 22, up from 28.4% on June 24 and 11% in April. At the same time, closed-source models’ share fell from 71.6% to 38%. Vercel’s figures measure actual model calls routed through its platform, not the entire AI market. Overall token usage on Vercel rose 59% month-on-month in July, with open models exceeding one-third of volume. DeepSeek overtook Google to become the second-largest model provider by token consumption, while combined usage of OpenAI and Anthropic models also accelerated. Spending remains concentrated in proprietary systems: open models accounted for about 36% of July tokens but only 8.6% of expenditure, while Anthropic handled about 30% of tokens and captured 65.1% of spending. The report suggests frontier closed models could eventually process just 15% to 25% of tokens while capturing 60% to 90% of the economic value.
