The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 0.7% to close at 36,958 on Tuesday as investors balanced a busy week of major Canadian bank earnings against fresh escalation in the U.S.-Canada trade dispute. Financials led gains after BMO posted higher third-quarter profit on strong capital markets results and Scotiabank reported stronger earnings driven by higher interest income; RBC, TD Bank, CIBC and National Bank also advanced ahead of upcoming reports. Mining shares added support as gold prices firmed. On the trade front, Canada said it will double counter-tariffs on U.S. steel and aluminum products to 50% and impose new 50% duties on U.S.-made milk, furniture, clothing, video-game consoles, smartphones and other electronics, covering about C$20 billion in annual U.S. exports. The move follows Monday’s collapse of bilateral talks, when the United States enacted 50% duties on roughly $20 billion of selected Canadian goods and threatened further auto-sector levies.
