Samsung Electronics has established a 2,132-square-meter EHS heat pump production line at its second Gwangju campus, shifting output previously made in China back to South Korea. Trial production began on August 19, and mass production is planned for late September after process, equipment, finished-product performance and quality checks. The line will produce more than 100,000 units annually, all for the domestic market. EHS systems use ambient air heat and electricity to provide heating and hot water, with a seasonal coefficient of performance of 4.9 at a 35°C water outlet temperature, producing about five times as much heat energy as the electricity consumed. Government measures recognizing ambient air heat as renewable energy, subsidizing up to 70% of installation costs, easing progressive electricity tariffs and extending investment tax credits to business and manufacturing equipment are supporting adoption. Samsung is also testing its EHS All-in-One cooling, heating and hot-water system at Samsung C&T housing research centers in Jeju and Yongin, with plans to expand applications from detached homes to apartment complexes.
