NEAR began rebuilding its security model in Q2 2026, adding ML-DSA, also known as Dilithium, for quantum-safe accounts and permissions while planning Universal Account IDs for autumn 2026. The Responsible Fintech Institute, Safeheron and NEAR are testing non-custodial 2-of-2 MPC wallet creation and transfers on NEAR’s quantum-resistant testnet, with Bison Bank, DK Bank and regulators including the Abu Dhabi Global Market, Bhutan’s Gelephu Financial Services Office and the Malta Financial Services Authority involved. The initiative is intended to generate operational data and open-source code for institutional post-quantum adoption. NEAR is also evaluating Falcon, reducing signature costs and developing quantum-safe consensus, but consensus still relies on the Edison curve and deployment is targeted around the end of 2027. Cross-chain threshold signing, where NEAR currently uses ECDSA and EdDSA for outbound transactions, and quantum-resistant Confidential Key Derivation remain unresolved.
