OpenAI Codex, an AI coding and task-execution tool, is seeing sharply different weekly active-user growth across enterprise professions, according to the latest chart from a16z released on Aug. 24. Growth reached 108x among lawyers, 41x in both sales and recruiting, 26x in marketing and 24x in health care, while engineers recorded 5x growth, the lowest among the listed groups. Codex has evolved beyond code completion into a digital colleague capable of breaking down tasks independently and running for hours. Lawyers are using it to process large volumes of long-form documents and compare contracts. The pattern suggests that knowledge work is becoming more programmable and that AI adoption is expanding from technical teams into high-value white-collar roles.
