China’s State Administration for Market Regulation has ordered nine automakers to recall about 4.3 million vehicles from Sept. 25, 2026, over emergency door-access risks linked to flush or retractable electronic handles. Tesla accounts for roughly 2.98 million mainly China-built Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, which will receive warning labels and an over-the-air update that can lower windows after a collision. A separate recall covers about 2.74 million China-produced Model 3 and Model Y vehicles made through late 2025, requiring Tesla to replace steering-wheel torque detection with cabin-camera eye tracking for driver monitoring during assisted driving. The action comes ahead of a 2027 Chinese rule requiring new models with concealed exterior electronic handles to include manual override mechanisms.
