South Korea’s new chief trade negotiator, Trade Minister Park Jung-sung, has ordered a coordinated, cross-ministerial response to US trade risks at his first Trade Promotion Committee meeting since taking office. The government reviewed potential tariff and non-tariff measures, US-bound investment issues and a Section 301 overcapacity tariff announcement expected between late this month and early next month. It also discussed bilateral agreements with Argentina and Uruguay, preparations for the September 30-October 1 G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting and efforts to diversify Korea’s trade network. Park’s broader agenda includes managing tariffs, subsidies, industrial policies, supply-chain alliances and export controls; advancing Seoul’s first investment project under its $350 billion commitment to Washington; strengthening semiconductors, nuclear power and shipbuilding; securing critical technologies; and fostering cultural content, consumer goods and artificial intelligence-related industries. The trade ministry said annual exports have risen from about $700 billion and are moving toward $1 trillion.
