Solana has reclaimed the lead in daily x402 transaction count, surpassing Base for the first time since January 2026 and ending roughly six months in which Base held the top spot on the micropayment protocol used mainly by AI agents. On Jan. 20, 2026, Solana first edged Base 518,400 to 505,000 daily payments, a 2.6% margin, before Base regained and held first place; the latest reversal reflects a sustained August shift rather than a one-day spike. By mid-August 2026, Solana commanded about 70% of monthly x402 volume across chains and had processed more than 35 million cumulative x402 transactions since launch. Developer matthew attributed the count flip largely to BlockRun’s AI gateway routing agent traffic through Solana, following Ramp’s Aug. 21 addition of x402 AI-agent wallet capabilities on Solana for a network of more than 70,000 businesses. In a single week reported Aug. 24, AI agents settled $3.3 million in USDC through x402. Across all chains, x402 handled 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million in volume over 30 days, with 94,060 buyers and 22,000 sellers. Solana’s sub-cent fees and sub-second block times support high-frequency machine-to-machine payments that settle almost entirely in USDC under the HTTP 402-based open standard.
