Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, a candidate in Tuesday’s GOP runoff for governor, said President Trump is wrong to support tariffs and a plan to import cheaper beef. Drummond, a rancher, said most Oklahomans believe tariffs have gone too far and that cheap beef imports would hurt the state’s cattlemen, ranchers and farmers. His comments followed Trump’s decision last week to temporarily suspend higher tariffs on ground beef imports to reduce costs for American consumers, drawing criticism from Republican lawmakers and cattle ranchers. The United States also faces retaliatory tariffs from Canada starting next month in response to the Trump administration’s new 50 percent tariffs on certain Canadian goods. Drummond is competing against former state senator and state budget secretary Mike Mazzei, who is backed by Trump. Drummond narrowly led Mazzei in the June primary, while Trump had urged Republicans to reject him. The runoff is for the seat being vacated by term-limited Gov. Kevin Stitt (R). Drummond has also opposed a Trump-backed aluminum smelter project in Oklahoma, while Mazzei has promoted it after previously criticizing the plan. Trump remains highly influential in Oklahoma, although a recent survey found that 38 percent of Oklahoma Republicans identify as “Trump Republicans,” compared with 56 percent who prefer “Traditional Republican.”
