Coinbase demonstrated an internal Slack bot on August 18, 2026, that allows AI agents to purchase services autonomously with USDC micropayments. Built on Coinbase’s Developer Platform and connected to AWS’s Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments, the bot searches the x402 Bazaar, which lists more than 10,000 payable services, selects a relevant provider and settles the transaction in roughly 200 milliseconds on Base, with fees of less than a cent. The bot acts immediately within predefined spending limits, without subscriptions, manual approvals or conventional invoices. The system uses x402, an open HTTP-native payment protocol introduced by Coinbase on May 6, 2025, that turns the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status into a machine-to-machine payment flow. AWS’s AgentCore Payments reached general availability in August 2026 after a May 2026 preview in which Coinbase and Stripe were early partners. Coinbase describes the broader model as Agentic Payments, enabling AI agents to transact economically rather than merely communicate. USDC is the settlement asset, while Base provides the low-cost network infrastructure. Businesses can reportedly accept x402 payments with minimal configuration, potentially reducing the time and compliance burden associated with traditional payment integrations.
