WestJet flight attendants voted Monday to accept a tentative agreement that would increase wages by more than 18% over three years, according to their union. The vote follows a strike earlier this month that caused hundreds of flight cancellations. The deal also includes a duty pay premium, providing additional compensation for previously unpaid time and addressing cabin crews’ broader challenge to pay systems based mainly on flying time rather than all hours worked. The Canadian Union of Public Employees represents about 4,400 WestJet flight attendants and had sought compensation from check-in until clock-out. Air Canada, American Airlines, Alaska Air, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have introduced pay for boarding or other specified ground time, increasing pressure on other carriers. WestJet, Canada’s second-largest carrier and majority-owned by Onex Corp, reached the tentative agreement with the union on August 3.
