U.S. District Judge Sharon L. Gleason dismissed an environmental lawsuit challenging President Donald Trump’s effort to reopen broad stretches of coastline to offshore drilling. The case was rejected as premature because drilling was not imminent in federal waters that Trump’s predecessors had placed off-limits. Gleason did not decide whether presidents can legally reverse earlier withdrawals, leaving the groups able to bring the case again if offshore activity moves forward. Earthjustice said it still considers Trump’s action unlawful and intends to pursue the claims if drilling activities become imminent. The dispute follows former Democratic President Joe Biden’s ban on new offshore oil and gas development along most U.S. coastlines, a move viewed as largely symbolic because it did not affect areas already being drilled and mostly covered zones without important development prospects. Trump, a Republican, moved to reverse Biden’s policy through executive orders issued within hours of his inauguration, seeking to support the nation’s record-high oil and gas production and unwind Biden’s climate-change efforts.
