Generalist, founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng and former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry, has reached a $3 billion valuation after raising nearly $200 million in additional capital led by 8VC. The extension brings its Series B total to $600 million following a $400 million round led by Radical Ventures in June at a $2 billion valuation. The company develops AI foundation models for multiple types of robots, and its Gen 1.5 model enables robots to learn new tasks from 3- to 12-second video demonstrations. Early backers include 8VC, Radical Ventures, Nvidia, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, and AI researcher Fei-Fei Li. The startup is working with a handful of customers to tailor the model for specific use cases. The funding reflects a broader investor bet that robotics may approach a ChatGPT-like moment, though some caution that general-purpose systems may still be years away. Competitors include Physical Intelligence at an $11 billion valuation, SoftBank-backed Skild AI at $14 billion, and Genesis AI, which has been in talks for a $3 billion valuation.
