Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate nominee, unveiled a four-point platform for data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure if elected to the U.S. Senate. He pledged to fiercely advocate for Gov. Greg Abbott’s state-level data center plan, support legislation barring Chinese technology from powering data centers and critical infrastructure, and pursue criminal liability for developers whose infrastructure empowers AI chatbots that undermine children’s safety. Paxton also said he would co-sponsor the Decentralized Access to Technology Alternatives Act from Sen. Tom Cotton, which would exempt new, off-grid electricity providers from certain federal regulations intended to prevent data centers from increasing consumer electricity costs. The proposals come as Paxton faces Democratic nominee James Talarico in a Texas Senate race classified as a toss-up and as Republican candidates in Michigan and Pennsylvania call for pauses or moratoriums on new data center construction. Abbott has separately ordered restrictions, an audit of new data center approvals and steps to limit the industry’s effects on electricity, water and local communities.
