Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan and his son were detained on Tuesday, Aug. 25, in a corruption investigation. Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Committee alleges that Kocharyan, working with people close to him, used his official position from 1998 to 2008 to obtain valuable state properties through fabricated pretexts and at prices significantly below market value. Investigators also allege that 56 properties worth 2.634 billion Armenian drams ($7.2 million) were transferred to Kocharyan as bribes, while a 30% stake in Toyota Yerevan was allegedly given to him and later registered in his son’s name through sham sale agreements. Six people have been detained in the case. Authorities are examining financial transfers to Kocharyan’s son between 2001 and 2019, along with more than three dozen properties in Armenia and abroad, and have imposed liens to prevent the assets from being transferred or sold. Kocharyan has previously faced charges over a 2008 crackdown on protests and bribery allegations; both cases were dropped in 2021.
